Across Texas

What shapes auto coverage in Texas

A few patterns we see consistently across our auto book:

Spring Storms

Hail Damage

Spring storm seasons regularly damage vehicles across DFW, Central Texas, and the Hill Country. Comprehensive coverage matters more here than in many other states.

Major Metros

Commute Traffic

DFW, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio commute corridors carry serious volume. Daily highway exposure shapes auto coverage differently than for someone driving primarily local routes.

Coast

Hurricane & Salt Air

Vehicles along the Gulf Coast face hurricane wind and water during storm season, plus salt-air corrosion year-round. We help coastal Texas drivers think through coverage with both factors in mind.

FAQ

Common questions about Texas auto insurance

What auto insurance is required in Texas?
Texas requires minimum liability limits of 30/60/25: $30,000 of bodily injury coverage per person, $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. That’s the legal floor — and with vehicle prices and medical costs where they are, the minimums run out fast in a serious accident. Most drivers with anything to protect should carry more.
Why is car insurance so expensive in Texas?
Severe weather (hail totals thousands of cars per storm), dense high-speed traffic in the major metros, a meaningful share of uninsured drivers, and rising repair costs on sensor-laden modern vehicles. We wrote a full breakdown — and what you can do about it — in this guide.
What’s the difference between comprehensive and collision coverage?
Collision pays for damage from crashes — hitting another vehicle or an object. Comprehensive pays for nearly everything else: hail, flood, theft, vandalism, fire, animal strikes. In a hail state like Texas, comprehensive is the coverage that ends up mattering most often, and it’s typically the cheaper of the two.
Do I need uninsured motorist coverage?
Texas doesn’t mandate it — carriers must offer it, and you can reject it in writing — but we almost never recommend rejecting it. A significant share of Texas drivers carry no insurance at all, and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is what protects you and your passengers when one of them hits you. It’s consistently one of the best values on the policy.
Does my personal auto policy cover rideshare or delivery driving?
Generally no. Most personal policies exclude coverage while a rideshare or delivery app is on, and the company’s coverage has gaps depending on the phase of the trip. If you drive for Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, or similar, ask us about a rideshare endorsement — it’s an inexpensive fix for a genuinely dangerous gap.
How can I lower my auto premium?
Bundle with your home or renters policy, raise deductibles to what you could genuinely absorb, ask about telematics programs if you’re a careful low-mileage driver, keep the record clean, and get an insurance quote on a vehicle before you buy it — similar cars can carry very different premiums.
Beyond the Daily Driver

Recreational & specialty coverage

A car isn’t the only thing Texans put on the road. If you also ride, show, or hit the trails, we write those policies too.
