Life insurance considerations that come up in Texas

A few angles we see come up regularly:

Families

Income Replacement

For working-age Texans with dependents, term life is usually the starting conversation — enough coverage to replace income through your kids’ college years or a mortgage payoff.

Business Owners

Key-Person & Buy-Sell

Texas has one of the most active small-business markets in the country. Life insurance often plays a role in buy-sell agreements, key-person coverage, and partnership protection.

Estate Planning

Legacy & Tax

Higher-net-worth Texas households — common in Houston energy, DFW finance, and Austin tech — often use permanent life insurance as part of estate strategy. Different conversation, different products.

FAQ

Common questions about life insurance

Term or whole life — which do I actually need?
Term life covers a specific window (10–30 years) at the lowest cost, which suits most families protecting a mortgage and working years. Whole life is permanent, builds cash value, and costs substantially more. They solve different problems — our term vs. whole life guide walks through how to choose.
How much life insurance do I need?
A common starting point is ten times your annual income, then adjust for reality: the mortgage balance, how many years of income your family would need to replace, future costs like college, and any debts. It’s a fifteen-minute conversation to get a number that actually fits your family rather than a rule of thumb.
I’m young and healthy — why buy life insurance now?
Because it will never be cheaper. Premiums are based on age and health at purchase, and a policy bought in your twenties or thirties locks in rates — and insurability — that may not be available later if health changes. Waiting is the most expensive common mistake in life insurance.
Is the life insurance from my job enough?
Employer coverage is a nice benefit but usually tops out at one to two times salary — well short of what most families need — and it typically doesn’t follow you when you change jobs. An individual policy you own is portable, priced on your terms, and not dependent on your employment.
Do stay-at-home parents need life insurance?
Yes. A stay-at-home parent’s work — childcare, transportation, household management — would cost real money to replace, often tens of thousands of dollars a year. Coverage on both parents, not just the earner, is the sound structure for most families.
Do I have to take a medical exam?
Not always. Many carriers offer simplified-issue or accelerated underwriting policies that skip the exam for qualified applicants, using health records and questionnaires instead. Fully underwritten policies with an exam often price better for healthy applicants, so it’s worth comparing both paths — we can quote each.
Why does a final life insurance price differ from the online estimate?
Published estimates assume the best underwriting class, and most applicants do not land there — blood pressure, build, a medication, or a family history is enough to shift the classification. The offer becomes real only after the application, any medical records, and an exam where one is required. Across a thirty-year term the gap between two adjacent classes is substantial, so the quoted figure and the issued figure are worth comparing line by line before accepting.
