Driving means I-20’s interstate speeds, loop-and-avenue commutes, base-gate surges, and a young population from three campuses. Overhead, the West Texas sky delivers some of the most violent hail in America. Risk Profile

What actually happens to cars here

Abilene claims are written first by hail, then by highway and base traffic.

Hail

West Texas Hail

Taylor County catches hailstorms among the fiercest anywhere — total-loss stones are not rare. Comprehensive coverage is the single most important line on an Abilene auto policy.

I-20

Interstate Volume

The cross-state freeway carries heavy freight and through-traffic. High-severity claims make liability and UM/UIM limits essential.

Wind

Blowing Dust & Debris

Constant West Texas wind carries dust that cuts visibility and debris that dents and cracks. Comprehensive answers for what the wind delivers.

Major Corridors

Abilene driving, corridor by corridor

Abilene’s miles concentrate on five corridors.

Interstate 20

The cross-state artery along the north edge — freight-heavy and the severity leader.

Loop 322

The eastern loop carrying commuters and truck traffic around town at speed.

Buffalo Gap Road / Southwest Drive

The retail-and-commute spine south, signal-dense and frequency-prone.

Dyess AFB Corridor

Base-gate traffic on the west side surges at shift change — predictable congestion, predictable claims.

Ambler / University Area

The streets serving three campuses — student-dense, low-speed frequency territory.

FAQ

Common Abilene auto insurance questions

A dust storm stripped the paint and pitted the glass. Is that a claim?
Comprehensive covers it — wind-driven sand and grit is a covered peril, not wear and tear, and the claim is repainting the affected panels and replacing glass that is pitted badly enough to scatter light. Whether to file is the harder question, because a repaint across several panels can run into thousands while lighter etching may not clear your deductible at all.
A grass fire came through and the truck was parked outside. What responds?
Comprehensive again, and it applies whether the vehicle burned outright or was scorched and smoke-damaged. There is no requirement that the vehicle be garaged or that you were present, and a wildfire is not treated as your fault. If it burns to a total, settlement is the vehicle’s actual cash value on the day, the same as any other total loss.
The wind put a limb through the windshield. Comprehensive or collision?
Comprehensive, because the vehicle was struck by a falling object rather than striking something itself. That distinction decides which deductible applies, and the two are often different amounts on the same policy. The rule that resolves most of these: if the car ran into it, collision; if it came to the car, comprehensive.
I could not see in blowing dust and hit the vehicle in front. Is that comprehensive too?
No — that one is collision, and it is the exception people get wrong. The dust caused the conditions, but the vehicle struck another vehicle, and impact with another object is collision no matter what the visibility was. It is also likely to be treated as an at-fault accident, which is the more expensive half of the answer.
