The Foundation of Business Coverage

Almost any Texas business eventually faces a third-party claim — a customer slips and falls, a contractor damages a client’s property, a product allegedly causes harm. General liability covers the legal defense, settlements, and judgments. It’s often required by clients, landlords, and licensing boards before they’ll do business with you. Harvey Insurance has been writing general liability for Texas businesses for years. Give us a call and we’ll walk through what limits and structure fit your operation.

What general liability covers

Three core areas of protection:

Bodily Injury

Third-Party Injuries

Customer slips and falls, visitor injuries, anyone hurt at your place of business or by your operations. Medical costs, legal defense, and any settlement or judgment.

Property Damage

Damage You Cause

If your business damages a client’s property — a contractor breaks a fixture, a service vehicle damages a building — general liability covers the cost.

Personal & Advertising Injury

Defamation & More

Less common but real: claims of libel, slander, copyright issues in your advertising, and similar non-physical liability exposures.

FAQ

Common questions about general liability insurance

What does general liability insurance cover?
Third-party claims against your business: a customer injured on your premises, damage your operations cause to someone else’s property, and personal & advertising injury claims like libel or copyright issues in your marketing. It’s the foundational business liability policy.
Is general liability required in Texas?
Not by state law for most businesses — but commercially, yes: landlords require it for leases, clients require it in contracts, and general contractors require it before subs walk on site. The market mandates what the law doesn’t.
What does general liability not cover?
Your own employees’ injuries (that’s workers’ comp), professional advice and errors (that’s E&O/professional liability), business vehicles (commercial auto), and damage to your own property. GL protects against claims from others — it’s one layer, not the whole stack.
How much general liability coverage do I need?
The market standard is $1 million per occurrence with a $2 million aggregate — the numbers most contracts and leases specify. Higher-risk trades and larger contracts sometimes require more, often satisfied with a commercial umbrella on top.
What is a certificate of insurance?
The one-page proof of coverage clients, landlords, and GCs ask for before working with you. As your agency, we issue certificates on request — usually same-day — including additional-insured wording where a contract requires it.
How much does general liability cost?
It scales with your trade, revenue, and payroll — office-based and low-risk businesses often pay surprisingly little, while contractors pay more because their claims run larger. A quote takes a short conversation about what the business actually does.
