Risk Profile

What actually happens to cars here

Driving in the Houston area looks different from inland Texas. A few patterns show up over and over.

Hurricane Season

Wind & Flood Damage

Hurricane wind, water, and storm surge can total a vehicle quickly. Houston drivers think about comprehensive coverage differently than inland Texas. Worth having that conversation before storm season.

Daily

Heavy Traffic

Houston-area traffic is some of the heaviest in the state, and severe weather amplifies it. Collision exposure on the freeways around Houston is part of daily driving here.

Year-Round

Theft Considerations

Auto theft is a real consideration across the Houston metro. We talk through what coverage makes sense for where you park and drive in Houston.

Major Corridors

Houston driving, corridor by corridor

Houston driving runs on a complex highway network. A few that matter most:

I-10

East-west across Houston. Heavy commute and commercial traffic throughout.

I-45

North-south spine through Houston. Connects to Galveston and points north.

US 59 (Eastex/Southwest Freeway)

The northeast-southwest diagonal across Houston. Heavy commute volume.

I-610 (the Loop)

Houston’s inner ring road. Constant volume and frequent construction.

Sam Houston Tollway (Beltway 8)

The outer toll loop. Heavy commute and cross-metro volume.

FAQ

Common Houston auto insurance questions

My car sat in water on the street. Is that covered?
It falls under the same coverage that handles theft and hail rather than under liability or collision, and it is one of the most common vehicle losses in this city. Water reaching the interior, the wiring or the engine usually ends the car rather than damaging it, because chasing electrical faults through a submerged vehicle costs more than the vehicle is worth.
How do carriers decide a flooded car is a total loss?
Largely by how far the water got. Depth at the seat base, water in the oil, silt in the cabin and a wet wiring harness are the markers, and they push a vehicle to a total quickly and fairly reliably. Owners sometimes want it dried out and returned; that is usually a worse outcome than the settlement, because the faults appear months later.
I am buying a used car here. How do I know it was not flooded?
Check the title history first, then look with your own eyes and nose: silt under the carpet and in the spare-wheel well, corrosion on bolt heads and seat rails, a musty smell that air freshener is fighting, and mismatched or unusually new upholstery in an older car. Cars from flooded regions do get cleaned up and resold, and the paperwork does not always follow them across state lines.
Should I drive through standing water if it looks shallow?
No, and the insurance answer is the least of the reasons. Depth is genuinely unreadable from the driver’s seat, moving water needs surprisingly little depth to lift a car, and Houston streets hide open drains and washed-out edges under floodwater. Coverage may pay for the car afterward; it will not undo the rest of it.
