City Streets, Then the Osage

What separates riding in Tulsa from riding in most cities its size is how quickly it stops being city riding. Head northwest and the Osage opens up into long, empty, rolling road; head east and Green Country puts hills, curves and lake water in the way. That proximity means Tulsa bikes accumulate two very different kinds of mileage, and the policy has to be honest about both. In town the exposure is other traffic, and specifically drivers who do not register a motorcycle in an intersection. Out in the county the exposure changes character completely: chip-seal that has gone loose in the heat, gravel washed across a curve after a storm, and deer standing in a road with no shoulder and no lights. The Route 66 alignment through the city adds a third pattern, drawing riders onto surface streets at low speed among tourists and turning traffic. Underneath all of it sits the same structural issue every Oklahoma rider has: the driver who hits you may be carrying very little, which is what uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage exists to answer.
