Base Camp for the Talimena

The Talimena National Scenic Byway runs the spine of the Ouachitas between Oklahoma and Arkansas, and Poteau sits close enough to its eastern approach that a great many riders treat the town as the starting line. That produces a riding profile unlike anything in the Oklahoma flatlands. The road climbs, and elevation means the weather at the top is not the weather you left — fog banks sit on the ridge, temperatures drop, and a surface that was dry in the valley can be damp in the shade at the crest. The curves are the point of the ride, which also means they are ridden faster than the surface always deserves, and gravel washed onto a switchback after a storm does not announce itself. There is no shoulder to speak of in most places and the drop-offs are real. What makes all of this an insurance question rather than just a riding one is distance: a wreck partway up the byway is a long way from a trauma center in any direction, and the bills start immediately. Medical payments, generous liability and uninsured motorist coverage are the three lines that matter most for a rider whose favorite road is also the loneliest one nearby.
