Great Roads, and the Crowd They Bring

Hot Springs occupies an unusual position for a city its size: it is simultaneously a tourist destination and the gateway to some of the best motorcycle road in the middle of the country. Highway 7 runs north out of town into the Ouachitas through curves that riders travel a long way to reach, and the loops around Lakes Ouachita and Hamilton fill in the rest. The consequence is a traffic mix that produces its own claim pattern. Downtown, riders share narrow historic streets with visitors who are looking at buildings rather than mirrors, and low-speed intersection incidents follow. Out on the byway the picture inverts: sparse traffic, high-commitment curves, and drivers unfamiliar with the road drifting wide across a centerline. Neither situation is helped by the fact that a substantial share of the bikes here are dressed — bags, fairings, audio, paint and chrome that a standard settlement will not fully recognize unless the parts have been declared. Add the seasonal surge of visiting riders, who bring their own coverage and occasionally their own gaps, and the argument for a policy built around this town rather than a default template is not hard to make.
