Low Miles, High Exposure

Hot Springs has one of the more active show and cruise scenes in Arkansas, and it produces a use pattern that confuses people who think about collector cars in terms of mileage. A car here might cover a few hundred miles a year and still spend more hours exposed than a daily driver — parked on grass in an open field, in a downtown lot during an event, or lined up along a street with crowds moving between the bumpers. Almost nothing that happens to a car in that setting is a collision in the ordinary sense. It is a door opened into a fender, a folding chair going over in the wind, a spectator’s belt buckle down a quarter panel, a drink set on a deck lid, hail arriving over an open field with nowhere to put four hundred cars. Those are comprehensive and low-speed physical damage claims, and on a car with a bespoke paint job or irreplaceable trim they are not small ones. What matters is that the policy is written knowing this is how the car gets used: that show and exhibition exposure is actually covered rather than assumed, that the agreed value reflects a finish nobody can simply re-order, and that the mileage terms make room for driving to events rather than trailering to all of them.
