Hot Springs
Boat & Watercraft Insurance

Hot Springs has three lakes, and they could hardly be less alike: Hamilton is developed and crowded, Ouachita is wild and island-studded, Catherine sits quietly between them. Harvey Insurance writes boat coverage for all three.

Three Lakes, Three Different Risks

Most towns have one lake. Hot Springs has three, and insuring a boat here starts with knowing which one it lives on. Lake Hamilton is lined with homes, docks and lifts, and it runs heavy recreational traffic all summer — the exposure there is collision, dock damage and passenger injury in congested water. Lake Ouachita is the opposite: forty thousand acres surrounded by national forest, more than two hundred undeveloped islands, no commercial shoreline, and long stretches with no cell coverage at all. The risk there is distance and isolation, which is what on-water towing and salvage coverage exist for, plus the submerged structure that comes with a lake impounded in 1953. Lake Catherine is smaller and gentler but shares the dock-and-lift exposure. One policy can cover a boat across all three, but the liability limits and the towing terms should be chosen with the busiest and the loneliest of them in mind.

On the Water

What Hot Springs boaters plan for

Congestion on one lake, isolation on another, structure on both.

Lake Hamilton Traffic
Hamilton is developed shoreline and heavy summer traffic. Collision, dock strikes and passenger-injury claims concentrate there rather than on the wilder water.
Remote Water on Ouachita
Forty thousand acres of national-forest shoreline with limited cell service means a breakdown can leave you a long way from help. On-water towing stops being a luxury.
Islands, Stumps & Old Timber
Ouachita’s two hundred-plus islands and the structure left from a 1953 impoundment reward careful navigation and punish a misjudged line.
Lifts, Slips & Storm Damage
Boats kept on private lifts and in covered slips on Hamilton and Catherine take wind and storm damage in place, which is a physical-damage claim whether or not the boat moved.

Lake Ouachita

The largest lake wholly inside Arkansas, ringed by national forest and dotted with undeveloped islands.

Lake Catherine

The smaller, quieter water below Hamilton, with a state park and a gentler pace.

Mountain Harbor & Brady Mountain

The main Ouachita marina access, and the jumping-off point for the lake’s remote western water.

Private Docks & Lifts

Where a great many Hot Springs boats actually live, and where storm damage happens without the boat leaving home.

FAQ

Common Hot Springs boat insurance questions

Can one policy cover me on all three lakes?
Generally yes. What matters is that the policy’s navigational terms cover the water you actually use, and that the limits reflect the busiest of the three rather than the quietest. We write it against Hamilton’s traffic and Ouachita’s distance at the same time, because a Hot Springs boat tends to see both.
Is my boat covered while it sits on a lift?
It should be, and this matters here because so many Hot Springs boats live on private lifts and in covered slips rather than on trailers. Wind, falling limbs and storm damage reach a boat in place, and that is a physical damage claim under the watercraft policy.
What happens if I break down on the far side of Ouachita?
That is the scenario on-water towing is built for. Ouachita has stretches with no cell service and no nearby marina, and a commercial tow across open water is expensive when arranged after the fact. The coverage costs very little compared with the recovery.
Does the lack of development on Ouachita reduce my risk?
It changes it rather than reduces it. Fewer boats means fewer collisions, but undeveloped shoreline also means no fuel dock when you need one, no shelter when weather builds, and a longer wait for help. Isolation is its own exposure, and the policy should account for it.
