Austin
Motorcycle Insurance

Austin has a world-class circuit and a lot of riders who use it. Almost every standard motorcycle policy excludes what happens on it, and almost nobody finds out until afterward.

The Exclusion Nobody Reads Until Monday

Austin is one of the few American cities where a rider can do a track day without taking a week off, and the result is that a meaningful share of sport riders here spend time on a closed course. This is where a standard motorcycle policy quietly stops working. Nearly every personal motorcycle form excludes losses occurring during racing, speed contests, timed events or operation on a closed course or racing facility, and the language is generally broad enough to catch an ordinary non-competitive track day. A rider who low-sides in turn one on Saturday and calls their carrier on Monday is usually told the same thing: the bike is not covered, the crash falls inside the exclusion, and the fact that nobody was being timed does not change it. That is not a trap so much as an unread clause, and it has a real solution — standalone track-day insurance sold per event or per season, which is what riders who do this regularly carry alongside their street policy. On the street side, Austin’s own issues are ordinary but not small: dense growth, construction-narrowed lanes, congested arterials, and a rider population large enough that the road-share conflicts happen daily rather than occasionally.

What Austin riders plan for

A street policy, a closed course, and the gap between them.

Closed-Course Exclusions
Standard policies exclude losses on a racing facility, and the language usually catches non-competitive track days too. The bike is on its own that day.
What Actually Covers a Track Day
Standalone per-event or per-season track coverage exists and is what regular participants carry. It is bought separately, not endorsed on.
Construction and Lane Changes
Growth has narrowed and rerouted a great many corridors. Sudden lane shifts and closures are a routine urban hazard here.
Underinsured Drivers
A city this size still has drivers carrying very little. UM/UIM is the part of the policy that answers when their limit runs out first.

FAQ

Common Austin motorcycle insurance questions

Is my bike covered at a track day?
Almost certainly not under a standard policy. Personal motorcycle forms exclude losses on a closed course or racing facility, and that language typically reaches non-competitive track days as well as races. Riders often assume that not being timed keeps them inside coverage; it generally does not. Ask us to read your specific exclusion before an event rather than after one.
So how do people insure a track day?
Separately. Standalone track-day insurance is sold per event or per season by specialty providers, covers the bike while on course, and sits alongside your street policy rather than replacing it. Riders who do more than one or two events a year usually find the season option makes sense. We will point you at it — it is not something we bolt onto the street policy, because no street policy will take it.
Does a track day affect my street policy?
Participating does not, by itself. Crashing at one can, indirectly, if it results in a claim you try to file or in modifications you then ride on the street. The clean approach is to keep the two clearly separated: street policy for the street, event coverage for the circuit, and honest answers about how the bike is used.
What should a commuting Austin rider carry?
Uninsured and underinsured motorist first, then medical payments, then comprehensive. Traffic here produces the ordinary urban crash where the other driver is at fault and carries too little, which is precisely the situation UM/UIM exists for. Comprehensive earns its place in a city with real hail seasons and a lot of bikes parked outside.
