Leakey
Motorcycle Insurance

On the Twisted Sisters most of the serious crashes involve exactly one motorcycle. Liability coverage, which is the only thing many riders carry, pays nothing at all in that situation.

The Crash With Nobody Else In It

Ranch Roads 335, 336 and 337 draw riders from every city in Texas, and the reason is the same reason they are dangerous: sustained technical corners, elevation change, and almost no traffic to slow anybody down. That combination produces a crash profile unlike a city’s. In a metro, the typical serious motorcycle crash involves another vehicle, and the other driver’s liability coverage is where recovery begins. Out here it frequently does not. A rider running out of talent in a decreasing-radius corner, a low-side on gravel washed across the apex, a run-off on a road with no shoulder and a real drop — none of those involve a second vehicle, and a liability-only policy responds to none of them. Liability exists to pay other people for what you did to them. It contributes nothing toward your own motorcycle. Riders who have carried liability-only for years without incident are often genuinely surprised by this, and the surprise arrives at the worst possible time, several hundred miles from home with a bike on its side. Collision coverage is the answer, medical payments is the companion to it because the ambulance ride out of this country is long, and the roads themselves supply the rest of the argument: open range livestock, axis deer that do not behave like whitetail, and no cell signal to call anybody with.

What Twisted Sisters riders plan for

Technical roads, no traffic, and no second vehicle to bill.

Single-Vehicle Losses
Most serious crashes here involve one motorcycle and nothing else. Liability-only coverage pays nothing toward your own bike in that event.
Decreasing Radius and Washed Gravel
Corners that tighten unexpectedly and storm gravel across an apex account for a large share of the run-offs on these three roads.
Open Range and Axis Deer
Free-ranging stock and axis deer share this country and do not behave like the wildlife riders are used to reading.
No Bars, No Help
Long stretches without cell coverage mean a crash may not be reported quickly. That lengthens everything that follows.

Where Leakey riders go

Three ranch roads and the country they cross.

Ranch Road 337

The most technical of the three, and the one that gives the loop its reputation.

Ranch Road 335

Long, remote and lightly travelled, with the least margin for a mistake.

Ranch Road 336

The northern leg through the Frio country, ridden as part of the full loop.

The Frio Canyon

River country around town where riders regroup, refuel and compare notes.

The Roads In

US-83 and the approaches, where riders arrive already tired from a long morning.

FAQ

Common Leakey motorcycle insurance questions

I only carry liability. Is that enough for riding out here?
Not for the crash you are most likely to have. Liability pays other people for harm you cause them and contributes nothing toward your own motorcycle. On roads where the typical serious loss involves a single bike and no other vehicle, that leaves you paying for the repair or the replacement yourself. Collision coverage is what changes that, and on these three roads it is the coverage we push hardest.
I am riding in from Houston for a weekend. Does my policy follow me?
Yes — a motorcycle policy travels with the bike anywhere in the country, so nothing changes when you leave the metro. What should change is what you are carrying before you leave. A policy that has been adequate for commuting is being asked to do a different job on RR 337, and the time to look at collision, medical payments and limits is the week before the trip.
What does medical payments coverage do that health insurance does not?
It pays regardless of fault and it starts immediately, which matters here because the transport out of this country is long and sometimes by air. It also covers a passenger. Health insurance eventually does its part, but deductibles, network questions and the sheer size of an air ambulance invoice make med-pay disproportionately useful on remote roads.
Is hitting an animal a collision claim?
It is usually a comprehensive claim rather than a collision one, which surprises riders who assume anything involving impact is collision. The distinction matters because a rider carrying collision but not comprehensive may not be covered for the exact event this country produces — open-range stock or an axis deer in the road. We generally write both together for anyone riding here.

Riding the Sisters? Insure for the crash that actually happens.
