Bandera
Motorcycle Insurance

Almost nobody rides the Hill Country alone. Riding in a group changes who is liable to whom, and that is a question worth answering before eight bikes are involved.

When the Rider Ahead Goes Down

Bandera is a staging town. Riders gather here, run the Hill Country in twos and threes and eights, and come back through in the afternoon, which makes group riding the normal condition rather than the exception. It also introduces a liability question that solo riders never face. When a rider mid-pack brakes hard for a low-water crossing and the two behind cannot stop, the resulting pile is not one accident, it is several, and fault gets apportioned among people who were riding together by choice. Your liability coverage is what answers to the rider behind you; theirs answers to you. Following distance and staggered formation are the riding fix, and they are genuinely effective, but the insurance fix is to carry limits that assume you may be found responsible for another rider’s bike and another rider’s body rather than for a dented car door. There is a second wrinkle particular to group riding here, which is that groups often include someone on a borrowed bike or a rental, and the coverage on that machine may be thin or absent. And the roads themselves supply the usual Hill Country arguments — fords that come up fast, cattle guards taken at an unfortunate angle, and stock on unfenced road.

What Hill Country group riders plan for

Eight bikes, one mistake, and fault spread across friends.

The Bikes Behind You
A hard stop mid-pack becomes several collisions. Your liability limit is what answers to the riders who could not stop in time.
Rentals and Loaned Bikes
Groups often include somebody on a machine that is not theirs, carrying coverage nobody in the group has actually read.
Low-Water Crossings
Hill Country crossings rise quickly and stay slick afterward. They are the most common reason a group stops abruptly.
Cattle Guards and Open Range
Guards taken at the wrong angle and livestock on unfenced road are ordinary hazards here rather than unusual ones.

FAQ

Common Bandera motorcycle insurance questions

If I cause a crash in a group ride, am I liable to the other riders?
You can be, and that is the part groups rarely discuss. Fault is determined the same way it would be with any other vehicles, so a rider who brakes unpredictably or crosses into somebody’s line can be responsible for their bike and their injuries. Because the other party is another motorcyclist rather than a car, the bodily injury numbers tend to be higher, which is a direct argument for carrying more than the state minimum.
A friend wants to borrow my bike for a Hill Country run. What happens?
Coverage generally follows the motorcycle, so your policy is the one in play, and a crash on your bike affects your record and your rate. Some policies also restrict who may operate the machine. Before handing over the keys it is worth confirming both points, because "he has his own insurance" describes his bike, not yours.
Does my policy cover a passenger on a Hill Country ride?
Passenger liability is normally included, though limits vary more than riders expect and a few forms restrict it. Given how much two-up riding happens on these roads and how exposed a passenger is, we usually recommend a higher limit for anyone who carries someone regularly, and we confirm the specific language rather than assuming it.
Is a charity or club ride covered?
Ordinary organized rides are, including charity runs and club events, because they are still street riding on public roads. What falls outside a standard policy is anything competitive or timed, and some poker-run formats edge closer to that line than participants realize. If your group does more than sightsee, tell us and we will check the form against it.
