Two Lakes, One River, and a Pool That Moves

Few places put this much water within a short drive. Bull Shoals runs forty-five thousand acres across the Missouri line, Norfork adds twenty-two thousand more on the North Fork, and the White River below the dams is one of the best trout fisheries in the country. The thing that catches newcomers is how much Bull Shoals moves. It is a flood-control lake first, and the pool can swing many feet through a season — ramps go dry, structure that was thirty feet down comes within reach, and a route that was clean in spring is not in late summer. On the river below, generation governs everything: levels change quickly and a boat that grounded on a falling river is a common enough claim here that guides plan around it. Add the boats kept in slips and on lifts year-round in a region with real winter, and coverage that only contemplates a summer weekend is not enough.
