The Narrows, the Clear Water, and the River Below

Greers Ferry is really two bodies of water connected by the Narrows, a bottleneck that funnels every boat moving between the upper and lower lakes into the same channel. On a holiday weekend it is the single most congested piece of water in central Arkansas, and congestion is where collision and wake-injury claims come from. Away from it the lake is clear, deep and rocky in the way Ozark impoundments are, with structure that clarity makes easy to misjudge. Below the dam the character changes completely: the Little Red is a coldwater trout tailwater that once produced the world-record brown trout, and its level depends entirely on generation. When the units come on, the river rises fast and hard, and boats and wading anglers who misread the schedule get caught. Coverage for a Heber Springs boat should account for both the crowded channel and the river that changes underneath you.

On the Water

What Greers Ferry boaters plan for

A bottleneck, clear water over rock, and a river that rises on a schedule.

The Narrows
Every boat moving between the upper and lower lake passes through the same channel. Holiday traffic there produces the collision and wake-injury claims the lake is known for.
Clear Water Over Structure
Greers Ferry runs clear and deep against rock. Clarity encourages people to trust depth they have not actually measured, and lower-unit strikes follow.
Little Red River Releases
The tailwater rises fast when the dam generates. Boats and anglers caught by a release face genuinely dangerous conditions, and grounding claims follow the schedule.
Fast-Building Ozark Storms
Storms come over the hills quickly and put chop on open water before you can get back to the ramp.

FAQ

Common Heber Springs boat insurance questions

Does my policy cover me on the Little Red as well as the lake?
Usually, but navigational terms vary and the river is a genuinely different environment from the lake. We read those terms with you, because a policy that assumes reservoir use may treat a tailwater run differently than you would expect.
What if I am caught by a generation release?
Damage from grounding, striking structure or swamping in a rising tailwater is generally a physical-damage claim, and it is one of the more common ways boats get hurt on the Little Red. The real protection is watching the generation schedule, but the coverage should be there for the day you misjudge it.
Is a boat kept in a covered slip still covered?
Yes, and it is worth confirming the limits. Boats kept in slips at Fairfield Bay and the marinas take wind and storm damage without ever leaving the dock, and some marina agreements also require a specific liability limit before they will rent you the space.
How much liability should I carry on a lake this busy?
More than the minimum a lender would accept. The Narrows concentrates traffic in a way few Arkansas lakes do, and injury claims from collisions and wake in congested water are the expensive kind. We size the limit against that rather than against what the boat is worth.
