Classic & Collector Car Insurance

A project car is worth more every month and is usually sitting in somebody else’s building. Both of those facts need to be in the policy.

The Car Is Worth More Than It Was Last Month

Central Arkansas has the shops, the fabricators and the paint work to support long restorations, and long restorations create a coverage problem that finished cars do not have. A project is a moving target. The shell that arrived worth very little acquires an engine, a driveline, chrome, glass, upholstery and finally paint, and at every stage it is worth more than the figure written on a policy at the beginning. Owners who insure a project once and never revisit it are insured for what they started with, which is exactly the wrong number by the time there is something to lose. The second half of the problem is location. For months or years that car is not at your house — it is at a restorer’s, a machine shop, an upholsterer, a paint booth, and moving between them. A shop’s garagekeepers coverage exists, but it is the shop’s limit, shared across every car in the building, and a fire that takes a full shop does not divide neatly. Your own policy should stay in force throughout, describing where the car actually is, and the value should be revised as the receipts accumulate rather than in one panicked call after something happens.

In the Garage

What Little Rock restorers plan for

A value that climbs and a location that keeps changing.

A Figure That Goes Stale Monthly
Every stage of a build raises what the car is worth. A value set at teardown insures the shell, not the car you now have.
Months Living at a Shop
Restorers, machine shops, upholsterers and paint booths. The car’s address changes repeatedly and the policy should keep up.
Garagekeepers Is Shared
A shop’s coverage is the shop’s limit spread across every car under that roof. A total loss there does not divide neatly among the owners.
Components Waiting to Be Fitted
Engines on stands, trim in boxes, a rebuilt driveline in a corner. Parts not yet on the car need their own limit to be covered at all.

FAQ

Common Little Rock classic car insurance questions

How often should I update the value during a build?
Any time the car takes a real step — drivetrain in, bodywork done, paint finished. Those are the moments the number moves meaningfully, and each one is a short call rather than a new policy. Owners who update once a year are under-insured for most of that year, which is fine until the shop has a fire in month eight.
My car has been at a restorer for a year. Whose insurance covers it?
Both, imperfectly, which is why you keep yours. The shop’s garagekeepers coverage is a single limit shared across everything in the building, so a large loss can leave every owner short. Your own policy staying in force is what closes that. Ask the shop for a certificate showing their limit, and tell us where the car is so the policy describes it accurately.
Are the parts covered before they go on the car?
Only if there is a limit for them. An engine on a stand, a boxed set of trim or a rebuilt rear end is not part of the vehicle yet, and vehicle coverage does not reach it. Spare parts coverage handles this, and on a serious build the parts inventory alone can justify it.
Can I insure a car that does not run yet?
Yes, and you should. A non-running project is exposed to fire, theft, water and the shop’s misfortunes exactly like a finished car, and the value is real even without an engine turning. Coverage is written against the current state and revised as the build progresses, which is the whole reason to start the conversation early rather than at first start-up.
