Getting the Amount and the Term Right

Two decisions determine whether a life policy does its job: how much and for how long. Most Oklahoma households are underinsured on the first and guess badly on the second. A workable starting point is the mortgage balance, plus what it would cost to raise and educate the children still at home, plus enough income replacement to carry the household through the years your paycheck would have covered — then subtract what is already in place through work. Employer coverage is usually one or two times salary and it does not follow you when the job does, which is the gap we find most often. Term insurance covers that stretch inexpensively; permanent coverage handles the obligations that never expire. We quote across carriers, because pricing for the same person can vary widely from one to the next.

What’s Covered

Life Insurance Options for Oklahoma Families

Different obligations call for different structures. These are the ones we write most.

Level Term Life
A fixed premium and death benefit for 10, 15, 20, or 30 years — the most coverage per dollar, matched to the years your family depends on your income.
Whole Life
Permanent coverage with a guaranteed death benefit and cash value that builds over time, for obligations that do not end at retirement.
Final Expense
Smaller permanent policies designed to cover funeral, burial, and outstanding medical costs so the bill does not land on your children.
Mortgage Protection
Coverage sized and timed to the balance on an Oklahoma home loan, so the house is not what has to be sold.
Business & Key Person
Buy-sell funding and key-person coverage for Oklahoma business owners whose company depends on one or two people.
Riders Worth Knowing
Child riders, waiver of premium, and accelerated death benefits that pay early on a terminal diagnosis — small additions that matter at claim time.

What Oklahoma families ask us first

Three questions come up in nearly every conversation.

Amount

How Much Is Enough

We work from actual obligations — mortgage, income years remaining, childcare and college, final expenses — rather than a multiple pulled off a chart.

Timing

Term Length That Matches

A 30-year term on a 15-year need is wasted premium; a 10-year term on a 25-year need expires at the worst time. The term should end when the obligation does.

Health

Underwriting and Real Rates

Quoted rates assume ideal health. We ask the medical questions honestly up front so the number you are shown is close to the number you will pay.

Why Harvey Insurance

How we handle life insurance

An independent agency has one job here: find the carrier that prices you best.

01

Multiple Carriers, One Application

Life pricing for the same age and health can differ substantially between carriers. We shop it rather than presenting one company’s product as the answer.

02

No Pressure to Over-Buy

We will tell you when term is the right answer and permanent coverage is not, even though the commission runs the other way.

03

A Person Who Answers Later

Beneficiary changes, term conversions, and claims all happen years after the sale. You reach the same agency that wrote the policy.

FAQ

Common questions about life insurance in Oklahoma

How much life insurance do I need?
Start with what the money has to accomplish: pay off the Oklahoma mortgage, replace your income for the years your family would still depend on it, cover childcare and education, and settle final expenses. Then subtract what you already have through work. For many households the honest number lands well above the coverage they currently carry, and term insurance makes closing that gap affordable.
Is the life insurance through my job enough?
Usually not, for two reasons. Group coverage is typically one or two times salary, which rarely covers a mortgage plus years of income replacement. And it ends when the job does, often at exactly the age when buying an individual policy costs more. Employer coverage is a good supplement and a weak foundation.
Term or whole life?
Term matches temporary obligations — a mortgage, the years until the kids are grown — and buys the most coverage per dollar. Whole life is for obligations that never expire and for people who want guaranteed cash value. Many Oklahoma families are best served by a large term policy with a smaller permanent one underneath it, and we are happy to show both side by side.
Do I need a medical exam?
Often, but not always. Many carriers now offer accelerated or fully underwritten no-exam options for healthy applicants within certain age and coverage limits. Exam-based underwriting usually prices better, so we will tell you when the exam is worth the extra step and when it is not.
Can I get covered with a health condition?
Frequently yes. Carriers rate conditions very differently from one another, and a diagnosis that draws a heavy rating from one company may be treated far more favorably by another. That variation is exactly where an independent agency earns its keep — we know which carriers are friendly to which conditions.
