The Gap Between Buying It and Owning It

Oklahoma City moves a lot of collector metal. Auctions, estate sales, private deals arranged three states away and closed over the phone — the market here is active enough that a great many owners acquire cars faster than they insure them. That produces a specific and entirely avoidable failure. The moment the hammer falls or the money changes hands, the car is yours and the seller’s coverage is gone, and a vehicle sitting in a lot waiting for pickup is uninsured unless somebody arranged otherwise. What follows is the trip home, which introduces its own set of questions most buyers have never had to ask: an enclosed transporter carries cargo insurance, but the limit is the transporter’s, not yours, and it is frequently well under what the car is worth. Driving it home instead means putting a newly acquired, possibly untested vehicle on an interstate for several hundred miles, which is exactly the trip a limited-use collector policy has to be told about. And then there is the valuation itself, because what you paid at auction on a particular Saturday is not automatically the number the policy will pay — it is evidence toward it, and it is the best evidence you will ever have, which is why the agreed value conversation belongs at purchase rather than at renewal.
