Monahans
ATV & Off-Road Insurance

Half the machines that run the Sandhills are not, strictly speaking, ATVs. That distinction decides which policy will take them, and it is worth settling before you need one.

What Is It, Exactly?

Dune riding attracts equipment that does not fit neatly in a category. A stock side-by-side is easy to insure. A tube-frame sand rail with an automotive engine, a shortened buggy built in somebody’s shop, or a machine so heavily modified that nothing on the title matches what is in the driveway — those are harder, and the difficulty is not the terrain, it is the paperwork. Off-road policies are written around defined vehicle types, and a purpose-built rail may fall outside the standard definition entirely, requiring a specialty form. A homebuilt with no manufacturer and no VIN raises its own questions about how it gets valued and whether it can be scheduled at all. Getting this settled at application is not bureaucratic fussiness: it is the difference between a policy that pays and a policy that turns out never to have applied to the machine at all. Once classification is handled, the Sandhills exposures are straightforward and specific — soft crests where a machine goes light and comes down badly, sand working into every intake and bearing, heat that punishes cooling systems, and the visibility problem that whip flags exist to solve.

What Sandhills riders plan for

Unusual equipment, soft terrain and West Texas heat.

What the Policy Calls It
Rails, buggies and homebuilts may sit outside a standard off-road definition. Settling classification at application prevents a policy that never applied.
Going Light on a Blind Rise
Soft dune faces and blind crests produce hard landings and rollovers. Injuries and machine damage arrive in the same event.
Ingestion and Abrasion
Fine sand reaches intakes, bearings and seals. It is a genuine mechanical exposure that sits close to the wear-and-tear line.
West Texas Summer on a Cooling System
Sustained high load in high ambient heat is hard on engines and on riders. Heat-related failure is common enough to plan around.

FAQ

Common Monahans ATV insurance questions

Can you insure a sand rail or a homebuilt buggy?
Often yes, but not always on a standard off-road form, and that is the point of asking early. A tube-frame rail with an automotive engine is a different animal from a factory side-by-side, and some carriers write it on a specialty form while others decline it outright. Tell us what it actually is — frame, engine, whether it is titled — and we will place it with somebody who writes that category rather than hoping a general form stretches.
How is a homebuilt machine valued if it is destroyed?
By agreement, because there is no book to look it up in. Build receipts, photographs and an appraisal establish the figure, and we set it in writing when the policy is written. A machine with no manufacturer and no comparable sales cannot be valued after the fact in any way the owner will like, so this belongs at the front end.
Is sand damage to the engine covered?
Sometimes, and it turns on the same distinction that governs every mechanical claim: sudden and accidental, or gradual. An abrupt ingestion event may be covered depending on the form; bearings worn down over two seasons of dune running are maintenance. We flag which side of that line a given policy sits on before you buy it.
Do I need liability if I only ride on private ranch land?
It is still worth carrying, and the reason is passengers rather than property. A rollover with someone aboard produces an injury claim that follows you personally regardless of whose land it happened on, and a homeowners policy generally stops at your own property line. Riding on land you own does not remove the exposure; it only removes one source of it.
