Moore
Renters Insurance

Moore knows what a destroyed building looks like better than almost any city its size. What far fewer of its renters know is that Oklahoma law puts a deadline on them in the week afterwards — a short one, in writing, and running from the moment the place became unlivable. Harvey Insurance writes Cleveland County renters coverage with that deadline explained up front rather than discovered later.

One Week, In Writing, or the Lease Keeps Running

Title 41, section 122 is the piece of Oklahoma tenancy law most worth knowing before you need it. When fire or another casualty damages a unit badly enough that enjoyment of it is substantially impaired — and the tenant did not cause it deliberately or through negligence — the tenant may immediately vacate. But vacating is only half of it. To actually end the agreement, the tenant has to notify the landlord in writing of the intention to terminate, and that notice has to go within one week. Do it, and the rental agreement ends as of the date you left, and deposits and prepaid rent that have not been earned come back. Miss it, and you have moved out of a property you are still party to a lease on. There is a middle case too: if the unit is damaged but still liveable, you can vacate the part that is not usable and your rent is reduced in proportion to the fair rental value you have lost. Now notice what the statute never does. It does not house you, it does not replace a single thing you owned, and it does not pay for the truck. It ends a contract. Everything from the night of the storm onward — somewhere to sleep, clothes, a laptop, the deposit on the next place — is what a renters policy is for, and it is the half the law leaves entirely to you.

What renters file claims for here

Moore renters face the weather the city is known for and the paperwork that follows it.

Notice

The Deadline That Ends the Lease

Oklahoma gives a tenant one week to put a post-casualty termination in writing. Vacating without the notice leaves the agreement in force.

Wind

A Storm Does Not Distinguish Owners From Renters

The same event that levels a building takes everything inside it. The landlord’s policy rebuilds the shell and covers none of the contents.

Displacement

Where You Sleep the Following Week

A destroyed unit produces immediate costs — lodging, clothing, a deposit somewhere else — before any settlement arrives.

Where Renters Live

Moore rentals, neighborhood by neighborhood

We write across Moore’s apartment communities, its rented houses and its rebuilt streets.

Old Town Moore

The original center, where the city’s oldest rented houses sit close together on small lots.

Fairmoore

Established streets north of the center, largely single-family rentals let on long terms.

Brookwood

Postwar housing supplying much of the affordable rental market, and a lot of first apartments.

Sunnymeade

East-side family rentals, generally houses rather than units, let to households working across the metro.

The 19th Street Corridor

Apartment communities along the main commercial route, convenient to the interstate and quick to fill.
