Classic & Collector Car Insurance

The climate-controlled facility keeping your car is almost certainly not insuring it. Read the storage agreement and you will usually find it says so in plain language.

The Facility Is Not Your Insurance Company

A lot of San Antonio collector cars live somewhere other than home. Older housing stock, tight garages, humidity that punishes upholstery and chrome, and a market with plenty of good climate-controlled storage all push in the same direction. That arrangement is usually a good decision for the car and a frequently misunderstood one for the coverage. Storage agreements are written to protect the facility, and most of them say fairly directly that the operator is not responsible for loss or damage to stored property and that the customer should maintain their own insurance. Where a facility does carry coverage, it is generally a single limit protecting the building and the business, shared across everything under that roof, and it responds only if the operator was negligent — not simply because your car was damaged. A fire, a roof failure, a break-in or a hailstorm at a facility housing forty cars does not divide into forty adequate settlements. Your own policy is what makes you whole, and the only things it asks in return are that the garaging address on it is the facility rather than your house, and that the agreed value still reflects the car.

What San Antonio owners plan for

Someone else’s building, your car, your policy.

What the Agreement Actually Says
Most storage contracts disclaim responsibility for stored property and tell you to carry your own insurance. It is worth reading the paragraph before you need it.
One Limit, Many Cars
Where a facility carries coverage at all, it is usually a single limit across the whole building and it turns on negligence rather than on your loss.
Garaging Where It Actually Sits
A policy should name the storage facility, not your home. The garaging address drives the rating and gets verified after a loss.
Who Else Holds a Key
Shared access, staff and other tenants change the theft picture in ways a private garage does not.

FAQ

Common San Antonio classic car insurance questions

The storage facility says it is insured. Isn’t my car covered there?
Their insurance covers their building and their business, not your property. Most storage agreements state plainly that the operator is not responsible for loss or damage to stored items and that you should carry your own coverage. Even where a facility has liability coverage, it responds only if they were negligent — a hailstorm or a lightning fire is nobody’s negligence, and the loss lands on your policy.
Which address goes on the policy if the car lives in storage?
The facility’s. That is where the car actually sits, and the garaging address is both a rating factor and something an adjuster confirms after a loss. Owners often list their home because it feels tidier; it is a misstatement on the application, and it is exactly the sort of detail that gets checked when a claim is filed.
What should I look for in a storage agreement?
The liability paragraph first, then access. Find out whether the operator disclaims responsibility (they usually do), what their coverage actually protects, who has keys or codes, and whether the building is sprinklered. None of that changes what your policy does, but it tells you how much work your policy is going to have to do.
The car sits for months at a time. Should I reduce coverage?
Keep comprehensive without question — fire, theft, hail and water are precisely the things that happen to a car that is not moving. What can sometimes be adjusted is the portion of the premium tied to actually driving it. Tell us the real pattern of use and we will structure it around that rather than around a guess.
