A great many collector cars change hands the same way: somebody dies, and a car nobody has thought about in years is suddenly sitting in a garage belonging to an estate. That car is usually uninsured.

Harvey Insurance is a trusted local agency serving families and businesses across Texas, Oklahoma & Arkansas — backed by America’s most reputable carriers.
Dallas has been a collector-car city long enough that a large share of the interesting metal here is now in its second or third generation of ownership, and the handover is rarely tidy. A policy does not survive the person who bought it: coverage on a vehicle typically ends with the named insured, and what follows is a period — often months, sometimes much longer — where the car belongs to an estate, sits in a garage nobody visits daily, and has no one clearly responsible for insuring it. Heirs assume the executor handled it. The executor assumes the homeowners policy on the house covers what is inside. Neither is true, and a fire, a theft or a hailstorm during that window falls on whoever ends up owning the car. There is a second problem stacked on the first, which is valuation. An estate needs a defensible number for a car that may not have been appraised in twenty years, and the figure that goes on a probate inventory is not automatically the figure an insurer will agree to. Both problems are solved the same way and early: get the car insured in the name of the estate or the executor while probate runs, and establish the value with documentation rather than with a guess somebody makes later under pressure.
