Broken Bow
ATV & Off-Road Insurance

Hochatown rents side-by-sides the way beach towns rent umbrellas, and half the cabins in McCurtain County keep one in the carport. Harvey Insurance covers the machine, the people on it, and the trailer it arrived on.

A Cabin Economy Built on Side-by-Sides

Something unusual happened to Broken Bow over the last decade. The cabins multiplied, the visitors followed, and somewhere along the way the four-seat side-by-side became standard equipment on a rental listing. That single fact reshapes the insurance question here, because a machine that guests drive is not the same risk as a machine only the family drives, and a great many homeowners policies quietly decline to follow an off-road vehicle past the property line. The terrain does the rest of the work. Forest Service road out of Beavers Bend turns to loose rock and washout after rain, the grades off the Kiamichi flank are steeper than they photograph, and the gravel between the cabin clusters carries far more traffic than it was cut for. Add the machines that sit outside overnight at an address the owner may be four hours away from, and you get three exposures stacked together — use by people who are not you, damage on ground that punishes inattention, and theft from a property nobody is watching. A standalone off-road policy addresses all three deliberately rather than by accident.

On the Trail

What Broken Bow riders plan for

A rental town, a national forest, and a lot of unattended carports.

Riders Who Are Not You
Cabin guests, extended family and friends put people on the machine who have never driven one. Who a policy covers when they do is a question worth answering before the trip, not after.
Loose Rock and Washed Grade
Forest road out of Beavers Bend cuts up fast after rain, and the pitch off the Kiamichi flank is steeper than it looks. Rollovers here are damage and injury at the same time.
Machines Left at Empty Cabins
A side-by-side parked at a rental between bookings is an attractive target, and the owner is often hours away. Physical damage coverage answers for theft; a homeowners policy frequently will not off-premises.
The Haul Down US-259
Most of these machines arrive on a trailer from somewhere else. The trailer, the tie-downs and anything that comes loose on the highway are their own exposure, separate from the riding.

The ground that gets ridden hardest in McCurtain County.

Hochatown & the Cabin Roads

Gravel connectors between cabin clusters, carrying more traffic and more inexperienced drivers than anything else here.

Beavers Bend Back Country

The forest road network behind the park, where surface condition changes with the last rainfall rather than the calendar.

Ouachita National Forest

Federal ground north and east of town, open, remote, and a long way from a tow if something breaks.

Glover River Country

Rough private and timber ground toward the Glover, favored by people who actually want the difficulty.

Timber and Lease Ground

Working land where the machine is a tool six days a week and recreation on the seventh.

FAQ

Common Broken Bow ATV insurance questions

My homeowners policy covers the ATV, doesn’t it?
On your own property, usually. Off it, usually not — and in Broken Bow the machine is almost never on the owner’s own property. Once it crosses onto a forest road, a neighbor’s gravel or a rental cabin’s drive, most homeowners forms stop responding. That gap is the entire reason standalone off-road coverage exists.
I let cabin guests use my side-by-side. Does that change anything?
It changes a great deal. Letting guests ride a machine that is part of what they paid for starts to look like a commercial use rather than a personal one, and personal policies are written for the second. Tell us how the machine is actually used and we will place it somewhere that will still be there at claim time.
Is off-road insurance required in Oklahoma?
Not the way auto liability is. There is no state mandate to carry liability on a private ATV or UTV, which is exactly why so many of them are uninsured. The reason to carry it is that a passenger injury on a machine with no seatbelt and no cage follows the owner personally, and nothing about that is capped by what the machine cost.
What about the accessories I have added?
Winches, light bars, roofs, sound systems, aftermarket wheels and cargo racks add up quickly and are frequently excluded or sublimited unless they are declared. We list them when the policy is written so the settlement reflects the machine you actually own rather than the one that left the dealership.
